Activities

There is always something to do. And always space to do nothing at all.

Life on Sømliøya happens mostly outside.

The island and the surrounding fjord offer space for simple things: exploring the landscape, spending time by the water, or gathering around a fire. There is always something to do — and, of course, always space to do nothing at all.

On the Water

Kayaking

The sheltered waters around the island are ideal for kayaking. Follow the coastline, explore small bays or paddle out between the scattered islands. On calm mornings the water can be almost mirror-like.

Fishing

FFishing is part of everyday life here. Cast a line from the shore or head out by boat and, depending on the season, you may catch cod, pollock, mackerel or even a helibot!

Swimming

The sea rarely gets warm, even in summer. A swim from the rocks is refreshing and warming up afterwards by the sun or the fire makes it worth it every time.

Walking & Hiking

From the island you can wander along the shoreline, through quiet forest and over smooth coastal rocks. There are no crowds or marked tourist routes, just nature at its own pace and endless mountains.

Heilhornet

Rising directly from the coast, Heilhornet is one of the region's most recognisable mountains. The hike takes around six hours, but the reward is a sweeping view across the Helgeland coastline, the fjords and the Norwegian Sea.

Wildlife Watching

Nature is never far away on Sømliøya. White-tailed sea eagles are often seen soaring above the fjord, while roe deer and moose regularly wander through the surrounding forests. Along the shoreline you may spot otters, seals resting on the rocks, and seabirds such as oystercatchers, cormorants and eider ducks. If you slow down and keep your eyes open, chances are you'll see something.

Exploring the Region

Island of Leka

Leka feels unlike anywhere else along the Norwegian coast. Its striking red and orange rocks—formed hundreds of millions of years ago—give the island an almost otherworldly appearance. And also add beaches, dramatic viewpoints and one of Norway's most celebrated coastal hikes, and it's easy to spend an entire day exploring.

Coastal Villages

The mainland coast nearby is dotted with small fishing villages and quiet harbours. A short trip by boat brings you to shops, cafés and the everyday rhythm of Norwegian coastal life — close enough to reach with ease, far enough that the island remains its own quiet world.

Around the Fire

As the light softens, the day usually finds its way back to the fire. It is where meals are cooked and shared, where stories are told, and where the evening slows to the sound of the water.

A fire by the shore is the simplest thing the island offers — and often the part of a stay that people remember most.
