Activities

There is always something to do. And always space to do nothing at all.

Life on Sømliøya happens mostly outside.

The island and the surrounding fjord offer space for simple things: exploring the landscape, spending time by the water, or gathering around a fire. There is always something to do — and, of course, always space to do nothing at all.

Fishing

Fishing has always been part of life along the fjord. Cod, pollock and mackerel are common in these waters.

Swimming

The sea is cold and clear. You can jump from the rocks and warm up afterwards by the fire or in the house.

One of the most distinctive peaks in the region. A day trip to the summit offers wide views across fjords, islands and the open Norwegian Sea.

Exploring the Region

Island of Leka

Leka is a small island off the coast, known for its distinctive red and orange rock formations — some of the oldest geological formations in the country. The landscape is surprisingly varied, with rugged mountains, open coastline, quiet beaches, and wide views over the sea. It is also home to what is often considered one of the most beautiful hikes in Norway, with trails that take you through this unique geology and out to panoramic coastal views. ![Leka's red rock formations and coastline](/images/IMG_6617.jpeg)

Coastal Villages

The mainland coast nearby is dotted with small fishing villages and quiet harbours. A short trip by boat brings you to shops, cafés and the everyday rhythm of Norwegian coastal life — close enough to reach with ease, far enough that the island remains its own quiet world.

Around the Fire

As the light softens, the day usually finds its way back to the fire. It is where meals are cooked and shared, where stories are told, and where the evening slows to the sound of the water.

A fire by the shore is the simplest thing the island offers — and often the part of a stay that people remember most.
